"What does SEO cost?" is one of the most common questions we get, and one of the hardest to answer briefly. Not because prices are secret, but because SEO is sold through several different models with very different price tags. This guide walks through the pricing models on the Swedish market, the approximate ranges that apply in 2026, what actually drives cost and how to calculate whether the investment pays off.
One thing first: every figure in this article is a broad market range, not a quote. Prices vary widely between providers, industries and ambition levels. Use the ranges to calibrate expectations, not as a definitive answer.
The four most common pricing models
SEO services in Sweden are sold in four main ways. The models suit different situations, and choosing the wrong model is a more common mistake than choosing the wrong provider.
Monthly retainer
The most common model. You pay a fixed amount per month and the agency works continuously on technical optimization, content, internal linking and monitoring.
Approximate ranges on the Swedish market:
- Smaller local efforts: roughly 5,000 to 15,000 SEK per month. Often limited to basic optimization and local visibility.
- Mid market: roughly 15,000 to 40,000 SEK per month. This covers ongoing content production, technical monitoring and regular reporting.
- Competitive industries and larger sites: roughly 40,000 to 100,000 SEK per month or more. E-commerce with thousands of products, finance, legal and travel often land here.
The retainer fits when SEO is a long-term channel you want to build continuously, and when there is a steady need for new content and ongoing technical maintenance.
Project pricing
A bounded project with a defined scope: a migration, a full site review, a content push ahead of a launch. The price is set by the scope, often somewhere between 30,000 and 300,000 SEK depending on the size of the site and the depth of the project.
The project model fits when there is a clearly bounded need with a beginning and an end. The risk is that the SEO work dies when the project ends, if nobody takes over maintenance internally.
Hourly rate
Consulting hours billed as you go. Swedish SEO consultants typically charge between 900 and 1,800 SEK per hour, senior specialists sometimes more. Hourly billing suits targeted work: a second opinion, help with a specific technical problem, advisory support for an in-house team.
The downside is that incentives get skewed for larger engagements. You pay for time, not results, and budgeting in advance is difficult.
Fixed-scope delivery
A packaged service with a fixed price, fixed scope and fixed delivery time. You know exactly what you get, what it costs and when it is done. A typical example is an SEO analysis with a prioritized action list, like our SEO Audit Sprint: a review of the site's technical health, content and competitive position that ends in a concrete fix list.
This model has become more common in recent years, partly as a reaction to vague retainers. It works particularly well as a first step: you get a decision basis before committing to anything ongoing.
What drives the cost?
Two companies can receive completely different quotes for "SEO" and both can be reasonable. The difference almost always comes down to four factors.
Competition in your niche
Ranking for "electrician sundsvall" takes a fraction of the work compared to "personal loans" or "casino". The more players investing heavily in the same keywords, the more content, authority and time it takes to win positions. Competition is the single largest cost driver.
Site size and complexity
A ten-page brochure site and an e-commerce store with 40,000 product pages are completely different assignments. Large sites have more technical failure points: duplicate content, crawl budget, faceted navigation, internationalization. More surface means more work.
Your starting point
A site with seven years of technical debt, thin content and a history of questionable links costs more to lift than a well-built site that simply lacks content. A technical review early in the process shows where you actually stand. We have written a separate technical SEO guide covering what such a review looks at.
Content requirements
Content is often the largest recurring cost item. Do you need five articles a month or fifty? Are they written in-house or by the agency? Does the subject require expertise that makes the texts more expensive to produce? A realistic content plan is often what separates a working budget from one that collapses.
Warning signs when comparing quotes
The SEO industry has a historical trust problem, and there are still players who profit from the knowledge gap. Some clear warning signs:
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody can guarantee positions in Google. Google itself states explicitly that nobody can. A provider promising "position 1 in three months" is promising something they do not control.
- Lock-in. Long binding periods without a clear delivery plan, or agreements where you do not own the content, the links or even the access to your own tool accounts. You should always own your own data and assets.
- Vague reporting. Reports that only show "number of optimized keywords" or activity lists with no connection to traffic, visibility or business results. You should be able to see what was done, why and what effect it had.
- Secrecy around methods. "We cannot tell you how we work" in practice often means link buying or other tactics that violate Google's guidelines and put your site at risk.
- Prices far below market. SEO for 2,000 SEK per month is rarely SEO. It is usually an automated report and idle time.
Does SEO pay off? A simple calculation
SEO is an investment, and investments should be justified with numbers. A simplified but useful calculation starts from traffic value: what would the equivalent traffic cost to buy through ads?
Calculate like this:
- Estimate how many extra organic visits per month an effort can realistically deliver. Be conservative.
- Find out what a click on the equivalent keywords costs in Google Ads. In many Swedish B2B niches, click prices sit around 20 to 100 SEK, in some industries considerably higher.
- Multiply: 1,000 extra visits per month times 40 SEK per click equals a traffic value of 40,000 SEK per month.
If the SEO investment is 25,000 SEK per month and the traffic value after a year is 40,000 SEK per month, the math works, and unlike ads, the traffic does not disappear the day you stop paying. Positions require maintenance, but they do not reset to zero.
The calculation does not capture everything. It misses brand effects and the fact that organic traffic often converts better than paid. But it gives you a floor to reason from, and it quickly exposes efforts that can never pay off: if your niche has 200 searches per month in total, there is a ceiling on what any investment can return.
To calculate at all, you need to know where you stand today. Our guide to SEO analysis walks through how to build that baseline.
When does fixed-scope delivery beat a retainer?
The retainer is the industry's standard model, but it is not always the right first step. A fixed-scope delivery fits better in a few common situations:
- You do not know what is wrong. Signing a retainer before anyone has analyzed the site is buying medicine before the diagnosis. Start with an analysis, for example an SEO Audit Sprint, then decide whether ongoing work is needed and at what scale.
- You have an in-house team. Developers and writers are in place, but you lack the prioritization: what should be done first and why? An external analysis with a prioritized action list gives the team a work queue instead of an expensive parallel organization.
- The budget is limited. A one-off engagement at a fixed amount is easier to justify and approve than an open-ended agreement. The effect of fixing the largest technical issues is also often greater than the effect of three months of ongoing minor polish.
- You want to evaluate a provider. A bounded delivery shows how the agency works, communicates and prioritizes, without a binding period. Good agencies have nothing against being evaluated that way.
The retainer wins when the diagnosis is done, the content need is continuous and SEO is a prioritized channel with a long-term budget. Many of our clients make the journey in exactly that order: analysis first, ongoing work second, with full knowledge of what the work should achieve.
Summary
What does SEO cost in 2026? Roughly this, in broad strokes:
- Hourly rate: roughly 900 to 1,800 SEK per hour.
- Monthly retainer: roughly 10,000 to 50,000 SEK per month for most, more in highly competitive industries.
- Projects: roughly 30,000 to 300,000 SEK depending on scope.
- Fixed-scope delivery: fixed price, known scope, known end date.
Cost is driven by competition, site size, starting point and content requirements. Avoid providers who guarantee rankings, lock you in or report vaguely. Calculate the traffic value before signing anything. And if you are unsure where you stand: start with an analysis, not a subscription.
